MARIA -A Play by Neféli
I am currently working on a third rendition of my one-woman show MARIA. The show was first written in my fourth-year course “Advanced Theatre Making” at the University of Glasgow (Theatre Studies, MA Hons). A year after that, I performed a redrafted version at the Old Hairdresser’s in Glasgow City Centre, for two sold-out nights. This year, I am going to the Edinburgh Fringe!
MARIA explores tropes associated with Mary Magdalene, which have formed her story and allowed for a misuse and conflation of her identity. The Madonna/Wh*re complex based on Virgin Mary’s purity and Mary Magdalene’s “impure” life and eventual repentance has been the pillar of and basis for religious misogyny which has seaped deep into the cracks of the Western “Christian” world and still dictates basic (mis)conceptions about femininity.
Sex worker, devoted wife, holy disciple, or completely out of her mind, there is literally one for every woman. But which was Mary?
Please DONATE to help MARIA get to Edinburgh Fringe 2025. Any contribution is valuable! Find the link in the wesbite header x
48hour Film Competition 2024
In Autumn 2024, I participated in the 48hour Film Competition as an actor in the film Blank Canvas. It was a short film produced by RATIO FILMS, co-written by a whole team of actors, directors, camera crew and backstage crew, and filmed in the Old Pipe Factory in Glasgow’s dearest Barras Market. Our qualifying prompts included an architect main character named Chris/Chrissy Murray, the phrase “Let’s Dance,” and a toilet brush (!), whereas our genre had to be a coming of age / comedy.
The film was nominated for Best Sound, Best Musical Score, Best Costume, Best Use of Character, Best Cinematography, Best Writing, Best Directing and Best Ensemble. It won Best Lighting, Best Production Design and Best Editing.
Fortune Cookie
A low-budget production company are making a film about the lottery. When a prop ticket bought on set turns out to be winning, the crew must decide who gets to keep its fortune.
Written and directed by Thomas Adams, and produced by Zach Pearl, for the GU FilmMaking Society, FORTUNE COOKIE premiered in January 2024.
